Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24, 72 at Long Beach in CA. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise at the age of an infant. Her aunt was an overnight nursing assistant so that she could have the chance to learn about art theatre or literature. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's model of how art could serve as an activist vehicle. DuVernay's mother also had a an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay to express herself by means of the medium of art. DuVernay was a child living with family members in Compton and spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. Her father was a witness to the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay used the summers she spent in Alabama to inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Following graduation, she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with qualifications in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay began producing in broadcast journalism when she was still at university. Her career began working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being given the task of watching the home and looking through the garbage from one of the jury. The tasks that she had to complete left her unhappy which is why, when she decided not to continue in journalism, she moved on to the world of publicity. DuVernay was hired right out of college as an assistant publicist in the studio that was small. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency.
